Viagra® and Skin Cancer

A startling study released in the Journal of the American Medical Association indicates that men who use the popular erectile dysfunction drug, Viagra®, may be up to 84% more likely to develop melanoma, the most dangerous and potentially lethal form of skin cancer.

If you or someone you care about has been diagnosed with melanoma after taking Viagra®, it is within your rights to take action against the company that put the product in your hands without proper warning.

Viagra’s® Association with Melanoma

According to a study conducted at Harvard Medical School and released in the June 2014 edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association, there is evidence that men who took Viagra® experienced a risk of developing melanoma more than double that of men who did not take the erectile dysfunction drug. The study adjusted for other melanoma risk factors, including medical history and long-term exposure to sunlight, and concluded that patients who used Viagra® had an 84% increased risk of developing melanoma.

Viagra®, also known generically as sildenafil citrate, has been distributed by Pfizer since 1998 and generates more than $2 billion in annual sales.  With the discovery of this correlation by the medical community 15 years after the drug’s release, it now appears that Pfizer may have withheld critical information about the connection between melanoma and the use of the “little blue pill.”

More than 76,000 people are diagnosed with melanoma each year in the U.S., and it is fatal for nearly 10,000 patients annually.  Increased monitoring of individuals with risk factors and early detection significantly increases melanoma survival rates.

Viagra® Lawsuit Inquiry

If proper warnings had been provided to patients taking Viagra®, many would have avoided this diagnosis by refraining from taking the drug or through increased monitoring by their physicians.  By withholding information on the potential risk of developing melanoma, Pfizer took away the ability for men to make educated decisions about their health and medical treatments.
