This year, The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is taking further steps to end railroad accidents. According to NHTSA, 232 people died in railroad crossing accidents last year alone. In recent years, fatality rates as a result of railroad accidents have dropped, but since 2014 the number of deaths has begun to increase. In an effort to eliminate these accidents, NHTSA has developed a $7 million radio and digital video campaign, “Stop! Trains Can’t” to educate drivers about the risks associated with improper railroad crossings.
Railroad crossing accidents occur when drivers attempting to cross the tracks ignore the warnings displayed on signs or attempt to beat the train. What NHTSA wants drivers to know is that trains cannot stop for incoming traffic likes cars can. This gives trains the right of way under any circumstance. According to the administration’s data, a train hits a person or vehicle every 3 hours in the United States. With the funding of this new campaign, NHTSA hopes to put an end to these preventable deaths.
NHTSA’s campaign targets male drivers 18 to 49 in the 15 states where the most dangerous crossings are located, as well as the states where 75 percent of the accidents last year occurred. The states where the ads will run include: California, Illinois, Texas, Louisiana, Indiana, Ohio, Florida, Georgia, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, Alabama, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Mississippi, New Jersey, Arkansas and Arizona. When speaking about the $7 million campaign, Federal Railroad Administrator Sarah E. Feinberg stated, “This is an old problem, but one that can be solved. Nearly all deaths at crossings are preventable. The message of this ad has a clear, life-saving message: Stop, because trains can’t.” You can read more about the “Stop! Trains Can’t” campaign on the U.S. Department of Transportation website.
