You may have heard reports most recently and over the last few years across various news outlets about the drug Risperdal®, and the side effects it has caused, in addition to the alleged off-label marketing that has been used by the manufacturer of this drug.
Risperdal® has been prescribed to treat mental illnesses, such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and other psychiatric conditions. However, the drug manufacturers have allegedly used off-label marketing tactics for Risperdal® to treat conditions such as ADHD and depression, among other conditions.
Johnson & Johnson, the drug’s manufacturer, has been and continues to be served numerous lawsuits for several reasons, including the alleged off-label marketing of Risperdal®, as well as its links to the condition of gynecomastia in boys and men.
Gynecomastia, a potentially humiliating condition for many, can cause a myriad of symptoms. This includes, but is not limited to breast development and enlargement, tenderness surrounding breasts and breast tissue, nipple swelling, nipple discoloration, and other uncomfortable and dangerous symptoms such as spikes in blood sugar levels, and swallowing difficulties.
Researchers indicate in a 2006 study in the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology that the use of Risperdal® leads to an increase in levels of the hormone prolactin. This hormone promotes the development of breast tissue, which is why gynecomastia has developed in males who have used the drug.
Our firm is investigating potential lawsuits on behalf of patients who have used Risperdal®, and fell victim to the alleged off-label marketing of the drug as well as potential lawsuits on behalf of males who used Risperdal® and developed gynecomastia, and/or other medical conditions as a result of using the drug.
